Our Film for Film Fest- Our Names- Our Story

Room 1 worked so hard last term to complete our film. It started off with an Inquiry into who we are, the importance of our names. This was ignited by our shared reading which was called ‘The Name Jar’ a story about a Korean girl who moved to Australia and was shy about traditional name. She asked her new classmates for a new name, but came to the understanding that she should be proud of her culture, heritage and her name.

The students went home and interviewed their whanau, to find out the story behind their names. They shared this new learning with the class. They were super pumped!! They even interviewed their teachers to find out the stories.

Enjoy our movie!

Welcome back to Term 4

Kia ora whanau,

We have had a busy and productive start to Term 4. This term for LCS we are focussing on Cultures from all around the world. We will be starting dance practises next week and we cannot wait! As part of our shared reading we read “Bok Choy” a story about acceptance and cultural differences. We have had some excellent classroom discussions about belonging and the importance of diversity. Below you will see a photo of Oscar being hot seated as a character! Super fun!

We also begin our touch sessions for Kelly sports! So good to see our kids enjoying the sunshine

Matariki Festival 2023

Kia ora whanau!

WOW!!! Last week was incredible, firstly to celebrate Te Wiki o Te Reo Maori & secondly because Glen Taylor School hosted their first ever Matariki festival. This term we have been digging deeper and learning about the 9 whetu (stars) of Matariki and how they guide our everyday lives- as each star represents something.

I was super proud of our kids, we had many schools perform and we even had food stalls. The students and teachers worked so hard.

We had kapa haka performances, and we even sang our new school waiata to an audience. It was INCREDIBLE!!

Tie Dye in Room 1

Wow!! Room 1 had a fun day creating last week. First we created traditional Maori kites and had to use team work to achieve this & then on Thursday we learnt a new skill- how to tie dye. The sunshine was out so it was the PERFECT weather for such an awesome skill to develop.

First we had to dampen the shirt with water, then we tied it up in different patterns using rubber bands, and then we squirted the tie dye onto the white shirt to create fun patterns.

Such a fantastic time!

We hope you enjoy our photos

Marvellous Maori Bread

Kia ora whanau!!

What a wonderful Monday I had with my kiddos in Room 1. We have been learning and making connections to Matariki. One of the best ways to celebrate Matariki is by sharing kai (food) with the whanau and sharing stories with each other. First, the students shared their favourite food, or food that reminds them of their family. This was a great way to launch food that is unique to New Zealand- Maori fried bread.

We had all the ingredients, and made the bread together which was so rewarding. At lunchtime, Matua Atama fried the bread as a safety measure. Before hometime we had some with Maple Syrup and shared some with Ms Wrack! Yummy!!

We wrote about is as part of our procedural writing for the week.

Math Matrices and Self Portraits in Room 1

Kia ora whanau!!

Room 1 have had a busy week. We have been exploring our Math matricies and making sure we use them deliberately in our Math sessions. Every session we will start with a Number talk warm up, and then use our matrices to reflect on our learning goals. Next week, Matua Atama will introduce FLIPGRID so we can vlog about our Maths learning (and LCS learning too) watch this space!!

We also finished off some self portraits to go along with our Name Stories!! Come to our class and visit us to see some of our final works.

Have a great weekend whanau

Room 1 have had a STELLAR WEEK!

We have so much to be proud of this week. Firstly, Ms Wrack announced that our class won the attendance award for Week 2!!!

The vibe was AMAZING!!! We were so proud of ourselves. We have also been working on a “Story of our Name” project for Film Fest. The students have researched their names and are interviewing our teachers to find out the story of their names too. This links to Matariki; as we are exploring our culture and identity.

On Friday to celebrate we had DUNKIN DONUT FRIDAY!!! We had workshops, donut making stations and it was fun!

Here is a photo of us holding our cup with pride!! Well done Room 7

Matariki Landscape Scenes using Google Drawings

WOW!!!!! I have had an amazing time working with the akonga of Room 1.

As a revision, we looked at tools we could use on google drawings. The tamariki sat around in a circle and as a whanau and together we created our Matariki scenes using the polyline tool on google drawings.

It was definitely a learning experience, and I pushed myself out of my comfort zone. Remember art is in the beauty of the beholder and there is something wonderful about giving new things a go.

Come along to Room 1 and check out our Matariki Art, we are so proud it!!

Learning About the Kawa of Care Student Agreement

Today in Cybersmart with Mr Goodwin we learned about the Kawa of Care student agreement.

We revisited all the learning we have done in previous years around looking after and caring about our devices. It’s really helpful to think through some of this stuff each year so that we continue to look after our devices and follow the Kawa of Care properly.

Here is the presentation we used on the Cybersmart Challenge Blog if you want to try it yourself!
